Popular Adult Education / Folkbildning

In Swedish popular adult education is called ”folkbildning”. However, "popular (adult) education" does not cover all aspects of the notion "folkbildning". Other common translations are “liberal adult education” or "non-formal adult education", but none of them cover all aspects of "folkbildning". There is a substantial literature trying to define the notion of “folkbildning”. On the one side it refers to the education of ”the broad strata of the population”, to cite a source from 1926, on the other side it is often nowadays referring to study circles, folk high schools, public lectures and more rarely public libraries.

In our division there are extensive activities related to "folkbildning". We have the only Folk high school teacher training programme in Sweden. Teachers from adult education study in our shorter undergraduate education courses. Most of our courses are taught in Swedish. The intercontinental master programme in Adult learning and global change is the present exception (see the link to Undergraduate Education below!). Our research focusing on different aspects of "folkbildning" is extensive, as well as our external relations to the field in Sweden and abroad (see links below).
